ARTIST'S STATEMENT

Charleston, South Carolina has been my home for most of my life. For most of those years I have been blessed to live on Folly Beach, just outside of Charleston. Folly Beach is a very narrow barrier island with lots of artists, musicians, and other creative characters who make up this eclectic, quirky and sometimes eccentric little community. So, for these reasons, Folly Beach is often referred to as "The Edge of America".

Art is as important to my spirit as breathing is to my life. I am a self-taught artist and the only rules I follow are my own which means I never let anyone tell me "You can't do it that way" and I always ask "What if?".

From the mid-seventies until the early nineties, I was a quilter. Then, in the early nineties I began to paint furniture in bright colors and abstract designs that looked very much like crazy quilts. All the time I was studying and experimenting with other mediums. I learned how to make paper, carve my own stamps, work with clay, special paint techniques and the art of assembling and juxtapositioning many unrelated objects to create something entirely my own. I now know that collage and assemblage is the medium that best suits me and my need for diversity on a daily basis.

All of my art now reflects my energy work, spiritual connection to the Universe, my love of nature and the beautiful seashore that I walk almost every day. I often throw in a little whimsy, for balance. After all, we all need something to make us smile.

My Symbology series paintings, are what many people call "happy art". I love bright colors and the energy that comes from being surrounded by them and working with them. I don't do many canvas paintings but the ones I have done have very special meaning to me.

My dolls are called "Spirit Dolls". They also represent some aspect of nature or spirit. All faces are made by me of clay, some of cloth or paper. I use various painting techniques to give texture and personality along with all kinds of embellishments.

All of my collage and assemblages are made of recycled and new, but manipulated, "stuff" that I collect. Painting techniques, beads, feathers, ribbons, fibers, my handmade papers, sometimes my photography and hand-carved stamps are also used for embellishment.

It is my hope that you derive the same joy, seeing my art, as I get from making it.
